Interactive Game play Design
Digital Art work.
Proposal
For the second project, I have decided to created a Digital Artwork. I have created an advertisement for the Play station 3. Being playable on a HD television, the graphics are so much more realistic and draws the player into the game. The advertisement shows a teenage boy playing on the play station and he gets so drawn into the game that his head turns into a zombies head which in turn is a character from the game he is playing. The teenager is so intrigued by the game that he doesn’t notice this.
The idea came about from my personal experience on the Play station 3. I have played games such as Motor Storm and Resistance fall of man and get so drawn in I often forget about the world around me. As a gamer, this is what makes the game more exciting and this is what is reflected in the advertisement.
Developing from the first project on this module, I stuck with the theme on zombies as I did a fair amount of research and enjoyed what was found, such as images, clips etc.
Creative Log.
Producing a short advertisement for the Play Station 3, I wanted to have an advertisement which most people could relate to when gaming. Or what they would like to feel when playing computer games. If someone finds a game particularly interesting, one can get addicted so to speak. Being drawn into a computer game is exactly what the makers of the game intend to happen when planning a game. When starting to produce ideas for an advertisement, I felt a teenage boy would best represent the scenario that my advertisement would be in. I used my play station 3 in the advertisement but didn’t feature the console itself as I wanted an advertisement which people would instantly recognised without the actual object being displayed until at least the end of the advertisement. The filming was done with a 12 mega pixel camera. My mini DV camera failed to produce the same quality as my digital camera. Using some footage from the game Resistance Fall of Man, I wanted to show the player being drawn into the game. Once all the filming had been completed, I began to merge footage from the game Resistance Fall of Man with the teenage playing the game giving the effect that he was almost inside the game itself. To achieve this affect, I simply reduced the transparency of the footage.
I did not want to use too much footage from a game which has already been produced and decided to make a story out of the advertisement. Over a period of 4 weeks, I developed a zombie in 3D using the software Maya. As I am not a very strong animator, I used still images of the zombie and at one stage had him sitting on the sofa next to the teenager. When the teenager doesn’t notice (because he has been pulled into the game so much). Then the head of the boy turns into a zombies head. In between two of the shots a white screen appears with the word Beware, strange things can happen on the Play Station 3.
To complete the entire project, Maya, Photoshop and After Effects were used.
Developing the project my biggest creative influences had to be the adverts I have come across for the ps3.
This video being my favourite as this is the one which inspired me most as the characters in the video are acting like those of the computer game. They have spent so much time on the games they live their lives like they were the characters.
The above video had the most amazing graphics an this advert was bringing the console to life.
The inspiration for the use of the zombie came about from my first project for this module. Films such as 28 Days later and Shaun of the dead are most favourite films. The zombie which I created in the advert is not very human like. I wanted him to be like this because in most computer games, the characters which are monsters or even zombies are always made to look very unique with bulging eyes or strange skin.
