A true story of catastrophe and survival at sea, Fatal Forecast is a spellbinding moment-by-moment account of seventy-two hours in the lives of eight young fishermen, some of whom would never set foot on dry land again. On the morning of November 21, 1980, two small Massachusetts lobster boats set out for Georges Bank, a bountiful but perilous fishing ground 130 miles off the coast of Cape Cod. The National Weather Service had forecast typical fall weather, and the young, rugged crewmen aboard the Sea Fever and the Fair Wind had made dozens of similar trips that season. They had no reason to expect that this trip would be any different. But the only weather buoy on Georges Bank was malfunctioning, and the National Weather Service had failed to share this fact with the fishermen who depended on its forecasts. As the two small boats headed out to sea, a colossal storm was brewing to the southeast, a furious maelstrom the National Weather Service did not accurately locate until the boats were already caught in the storm’s grip, trapped in the treacherous waters of Georges Bank. Battered by sixty-foot waves and hurricane-force winds, the crews of the Fair Wind and the Sea Fever (captained by Peter Brown, whose father owned the Andrea Gail of Perfect Storm fame) struggled heroically to keep their vessels afloat. But the storm soon severely crippled one boat and overturned the other, trapping its crew inside. Meticulously researched and vividly told, Fatal Forecast is first and foremost a tale of miraculous survival. Most amazing is the story of Ernie Hazzard, who managed to crawl inside a tiny inflatable life raft and then spent more than fifty terrifying hours adrift on the stormy open sea. By turns tragic, thrilling, and inspiring, Ernie’s story deserves a place among the greatest survival tales ever told. Equally riveting are the stories of the brave men and women from the Coast Guard and the crew of a nearby fishing boat who imperiled their own lives that day in order to save the lives of others. As gripping and harrowing as The Perfect Storm - but with a miracle ending - Fatal Forecast is an unforgettable true story about the collision of two spectacular forces: the brutality of nature and the human will to survive.

I followed around Stan Boyner yesterday (May 17, 200 and he was kind enough to let me shoot some of the recovery effort in and around where his home is now located (a full plot south of where the home originally stood. He was able to salvage his grandfather’s shotgun from the rubble immediately under the steel frame that his home was sitting atop of.

To answer my father’s question, the EPA has already conducted ground and air quality analysis, as well as sent in the filters from the PM10 collectors to the Dallas office, all results have come back negative for toxicity and particulate matter of Asbestos, Lead and Zinc. John A., a contractor for FEMA, was one of five inspectors allowing residents to place themselves on a federal grant list to receive up to $28,000 USD for living expenses, repairs to homes still standing, and personal effects replacement. While the town is still being bought out by the fed, they’re going to be relocated to any place of their choice, because instead of simply building gov’t housing in Cardin or any of the other neighboring towns, they’ll simply hand ‘em a cheque when they can get to it, and the residents are free to find housing anywhere else in the U.S.A.

I’d also like to send a personal shout-out to Geri and Rob in Picher, thanks for your hospitality, and the warm hearts that opened up to allow us into your home at such a greatly emotional time. We had a wonderful evening, and hope to cross paths in the future. Can’t wait to hear from you both soon!

This superb — though very violent — mix of comedy, drama and action is set at the end of the Gulf War. Hearing a rumour that Saddam Hussein has stashed stolen gold in bunkers, US soldiers George Clooney, Ice Cube and Mark Wahlberg embark on a secret field trip with the help of a map they find concealed about an Iraqi soldier’s person. It seems simple enough: grab the bullion and be rich for the rest of their lives. However, their quest for wealth is diverted when they reluctantly agree to help a group of Iraqi dissidents who are being tortured by Saddam’s men. Wittily scripted by director David O Russell, it boasts terrific performances (especially from Clooney) and takes some well-aimed stabs at the late-20th-century phenomenon of war waged on television. It’s reckless, gripping and unmissable.

One aspect of chasing that I hadn’t anticipated before hitting the road was the amount of down time one might experience between storms. Our last chase was Wednesday, May 14, when we nearly caught a tornado near Big Springs, Texas. Since then, however, the weather system that triggered that storm, as well as several others that day, cycled down. This means that the cold front dropped well into Mexico, wiping the atmosphere of much of its moisture, which you need to have tornadic storms. The next trough brining in Gulf moisture may not appear until Tuesday or Wednesday of this next week, and even then the computer models aren’t predicting tornadic potential until Thursday through Sunday.

So what is a group of storm chasers to do when there are no storms? Drive–a lot–looking for the stray LP, or low precipitation storm, that might display lovely cloud formations and some small hail. And if that’s not possible? Then we become tourists, like we were yesterday in Roswell, New Mexico. That’s right, the storm chases set their sites on an alien crash site, which, interestingly, was later said to be merely the remnants of a weather balloon that had crashed just outside the air force base. Another interesting connection to storms: the supercells that produce tornadoes are affectionately called “mother ships” because of their size and rotation when hovering over the landscape. The running joke yesterday? “I went to Roswell and probed a mother ship.” Of course, the only thing we “probed” with our portable Doppler radar were a few LPs that dropped a few rain showers on Roswell.

The other aspect of chasing that I hadn’t anticipated is the lack of time for writing. Since we’re in the vans for anywhere from 8 to 10 hours each day, even on “down time,” we’re left with very little time for ourselves. A usual day begins around 7:30 for me. I shower, go for a walk, grab some coffee and re-pack all of the stuff that I unpacked the night before. We meet at 9:00 to go over weather data or the plans for the drive and then leave the hotel around 10:30 or 11:00, heading out across hundreds of miles of open states–waiting. We may or may not stop for lunch, but we always seem to pull into the hotel no earlier than 7:00 (on chase days it’s usually around 11:00 pm), which means a late dinner and phone calls and e-mails to family and friends.

As a writer hoping to chronicle the chase, I rely heavily on my notes and my iPod recorder to capture the specifics of each day–but the larger trends in my thinking are sadly neglected. I’m the kind of person who needs extended periods in front of a computer to make sense of the details. It’s a luxury I don’t have right now. My plan is to spend the few weeks after I return from the chase writing out my thoughts in long hand on the computer and then letting them mull for a while (maybe a few more weeks) while I enjoy the summer with my two boys, Dane and Kevin. I don’t think I’ll plan to travel anywhere by car for a good long while.

PS today we’ll cross the border of the Oklahoma panhandle into Kansas, which for those of you who know me, is perhaps one of the more meaningful times of this trip. It’s been nearly three years since I called Kansas home, and I’m eager to return for a few days.
